Data, analysis, solutions — engineering a better environment

Sustainability research goes wrong in a specific way: the study measures something real, then makes a claim far larger than the measurement supports. Fixing that is mostly a matter of drawing the boundary honestly.

The poster covers the seven areas we are asked for: sustainability assessment, resource efficiency analysis, pollution and emission studies, carbon footprint analysis, green infrastructure design, sustainable material analysis and environmental monitoring. Alongside them sit the six sustainability pillars — environmental, social, economic, transport, waste and governance — because a study that treats sustainability as an environmental question alone will be marked down for it.

The green campus case study on the artwork shows what a complete piece of work looks like: rainwater harvesting covering the whole campus, a solar photovoltaic system, waste segregation and composting, native planting and sensor-based lighting, with the before-and-after environmental monitoring results tabulated for particulates, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and noise.

Numbers of that kind are only meaningful with a stated baseline, a stated period and a stated method. A twenty-seven per cent reduction in total impact means nothing until the reader knows twenty-seven per cent of what, measured how, over how long, and against which alternative.

Life cycle assessment, done to a standard

Life cycle assessment has an international standard behind it, and reviewers increasingly expect studies to follow it rather than to invent a method. That means declaring a functional unit, defining the system boundary, stating whether the study is cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave, naming the impact assessment method and the database version, and reporting the allocation approach where a process yields more than one product.

Most rejected sustainability papers fail on one of these. A functional unit of 'one building' is not comparable with anything; one square metre of floor area over a fifty-year service life is. A boundary that quietly excludes transport will produce a lower number than a competing study that includes it, and the two cannot be compared.

We build the inventory with you, run the assessment in SimaPro or an open equivalent, and — importantly — run a sensitivity analysis on the two or three assumptions that most affect the result. A conclusion that survives a plausible change in the electricity mix is worth far more than one that does not.

Monitoring data, and what it can honestly show

Before-and-after monitoring is persuasive and easy to over-read. Particulate concentrations fall in the monsoon whatever anyone plants; noise drops when a nearby road closes for repair. A study that attributes such changes to its intervention without a control or a seasonal adjustment is making a claim it cannot defend.

We plan monitoring so that attribution is possible: a control location where practical, measurements over a period long enough to cover seasonal variation, instrument calibration recorded, and the analysis stated in advance. Where those conditions cannot be met — and often they cannot within a thesis timeline — the honest response is to report the change and discuss the confounders explicitly.

That honesty is not a weakness in the work. Examiners and reviewers respond far better to a candidate who identifies the limits of their own evidence than to one who states a causal conclusion the design cannot support.

About this service

What is a functional unit and why does it matter so much?

It is the unit of service the study measures against — one square metre of floor over fifty years, one tonne of material delivered, one passenger-kilometre. Without it, two studies cannot be compared and neither can be checked. Reviewers look for it first.

Do I need paid software for life cycle assessment?

Not necessarily. SimaPro and GaBi are the common commercial tools, but openLCA with a free database is perfectly publishable if the database is named and its version stated. We will tell you what your intended journal or examiner expects.

Can you help with primary data collection?

We help design the collection — what to measure, where, how often, with what instrument and what calibration record — and we analyse what you gather. We do not carry out field measurement on your behalf.

My results show a smaller improvement than I hoped. What now?

Report it. A modest, well-evidenced improvement is a publishable finding and a defensible thesis. Inflating it by narrowing the boundary until the number looks better is the fastest way to be caught, because a reviewer will recompute it. It is also worth asking why the gain was small: often the answer is that the dominant impact lies outside the part of the system you changed, and saying so is itself a useful contribution.
