A literature review is not a list of what people found. It is an argument, built from other people's work, that ends by making your study necessary.
The four words on the magnifying glass in the poster — relevant, reliable, recent, impactful — are the screening criteria, and applying them consistently is most of the work. Relevant means it bears on your specific question, not merely your topic. Reliable means the method supports the claim. Recent means current enough for a field that moves, with older work included only when it is foundational. Impactful is not the same as highly cited, though the two correlate.
The failure mode is the annotated bibliography: paragraph after paragraph beginning 'Sharma (2021) found that…', each summarising one paper, none speaking to another. It reads as effort without thought, and it cannot produce a gap, because a gap only becomes visible when studies are compared.
A synthesised review is organised by theme, by construct, by method or by debate — never by author. Within each theme it says what is agreed, what is contested, what the contested positions rest on, and what nobody has examined. The last of those is your gap, and by the time the reader reaches it they should already have seen it coming.

Most reviews evaluate findings. A strong review evaluates methods, because a finding is only as good as the design that produced it. Two papers reporting opposite results are not simply in conflict — one may have used a convenience sample of eighty students and the other a stratified sample of nine hundred employees, and saying so resolves the apparent contradiction and shows the reader you understood both.
That is what critical means in this context. Not dismissive, and not a paragraph of praise either. It means noting the sample, the design, the measurement and the analysis, and drawing the reader's attention to the ones that bear on whether the conclusion holds in your context.
Comparison tables are the most efficient way to do it. One row per study, columns for context, sample, design, measures, key finding and limitation. Building that table is what turns a pile of PDFs into a structure, and it usually reveals the gap without anyone having to hunt for it.
A review needs a question as precise as an empirical study. Vague questions produce unmanageable searches.

Searching has an end point, and it is not exhaustion. Stop when new searches stop returning new relevant work — the same names and papers keep appearing — and record that you reached that point. For a doctoral review, rerun the search shortly before submission and add anything significant that appeared in the meantime; examiners do check the most recent citation date.
Reference management is not optional at this scale. Two hundred sources handled by hand will produce mismatches between the text and the bibliography, and that is one of the easiest corrections for an examiner to find. A library in Mendeley, Zotero or EndNote makes the bibliography a by-product rather than a task, and lets you switch citation style if the requirement changes.
We hand the library over with the work. It is yours, it will still be useful when you write the next paper from the same thesis, and it means nobody has to rebuild it.

There is no fixed number, and counting is the wrong instinct. A doctoral review usually cites between a hundred and three hundred, but a focused review of eighty well-chosen papers beats a padded three hundred. What matters is that the search was systematic and that nothing important in your area is missing.
Reorganise by theme rather than by author, and build a comparison table first. Once you can see which studies agree, which disagree, and on what, the paragraphs almost write themselves — and the gap becomes visible instead of being asserted at the end.
