Writing a literature review that argues instead of lists

A review is an argument towards your gap, not a summary of everything you read.

Writing 8 min read

The most common weakness in a submitted Chapter 2 is structure. It reads as a sequence of paragraphs, each summarising one paper, in the order the author happened to read them. Nothing in it builds towards anything.

Organise by theme, never by paper

If your paragraphs begin "Sharma (2019) found…", "Then Kumar (2020) studied…", you are writing an annotated bibliography. A thematic review begins with the idea and cites the evidence for it: "Perceived organisational support has been linked to retention across sectors (Sharma, 2019; Kumar, 2020), though the effect weakens in high-attrition industries (Rao, 2021)."

Same sources. Completely different function.

Make the search reproducible

Even for a narrative review, document what you did: which databases, which search strings, which date range, what you included and excluded and why. It takes one paragraph and one table, and it turns "I read some papers" into "here is my method".

The gap has to be earned

A gap is not "nobody has studied this in Nagpur". That is a location, not a contribution. A defensible gap comes from one of these:

  • Findings that conflict across studies, unexplained
  • A relationship tested but never with a moderator your theory suggests matters
  • A construct measured with an instrument that does not fit your population
  • A theory well tested in one context and never in a materially different one, with a reason why the difference should matter

Note the last four words. Context alone is not a gap; a theoretical reason why context should change the result is.

Two tables that do a lot of work

A comparison table — study, sample, method, key finding, limitation — lets an examiner see your whole evidence base at once. A gap table maps what has been done against what has not. Between them they do more for your chapter than another two thousand words of prose.
